I am thrilled to finally be sharing the details about my new book, Every Day, Bloom! A 90 day collection of self-care notes and affirmations for social justice creatives, entrepreneurs and change agents.
“Every day, bloom.”
It’s a simple sentence. Yet, a powerful one. It is a reminder to pour into ourselves as much as we pour into the efforts and causes that mean so much to us in this world. It is a reminder that even though we spend our days working hard to shine light on dark places and injustices, we are entitled to shine a little of that light on ourselves as well. We are entitled to bloom.
Why I Wrote It.
I wrote this book because, quite honestly, I needed it. I have no shame in admitting that injustices in this world can be overwhelming at times. There have been times that I’ve wanted to throw my hands in the air and give up when I couldn’t see progress being made after all of the emotional labor I put into something. The problems were (and still are) so big, that any change seemed so small. Those are the days I forgot my “why.” Those are the days I needed these reminders the most.
I needed to remember who ultimately had the power to validate who I was and what I was trying to accomplish. I needed to spend time learning and growing in allyship with myself so that I could do the work to guide others. I needed to remember that progress is a process that ebbs and flows and that I couldn’t rest my identity on whether or not someone changed quickly enough. Writing this book helped me remember that.
Who Is This Book For?
Us. The ones who disrupt the common narrative to expose injustices, both big and small. The ones who amplify the voices of the underrepresented and marginalized. The ones who create and defend spaces where those voices can be heard in truth and authenticity.
This book is for all of us who do the heavy lifting because we believe in our power to make a difference. We are capable and determine and filled with passion for equality and the betterment of our collective communities. We desire to play a part in creating the world we believe in.
Why a Self-Care Book?
Those of us who do the heavy lifting know just how much emotional labor goes into guiding people through misguided thoughts into a place of enlightened perspective. We pour ourselves into that effort, with unshaken commitment, because we know positive change happens when we do that. We work hard. Each of us play a unique and important roll in the drive for equality and justice. However, it is important for us to remember that we must pour that same compassion and encouragement into ourselves. Our work is not sustainable if we don’t take care of ourselves in the process.
We must rest when we need rest. We must step back when we need to refreshen our perspectives. We must validate ourselves when the world seeks to invalidate us.
We must recharge our voices. We must recharge our bodies. We must recharge our minds. We must recharge our hearts.
